Food Bank of San Luis Obispo County The Food Bank is a clearinghouse for donated retail food products, surplus produce from growers, and USDA commodities. The food is gathered, stored, and then distributed to more than 140 nonprofit agencies and distribution sites from Nipomo to San Miguel. They provide food to more than 25,000 people in the county. Many recipients are children from families where a parent is working, but whose income is not sufficient to make ends meet.
The Food Bank staff and volunteers distribute food to hungry people through the member nonprofit agencies. This food is a wide variety of fresh, frozen, canned and packaged goods. Since being founded in 1988, the Food Bank has become the only source of large-quantity donated or low-cost food to thousands of very low-income residents of San Luis Obispo County. Save Music in our Schools
The first Save Music in Our Schools Concert took place on March 7, 2004 in the Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly. This joint concert featured all the bands and choirs from Morro Bay High School and San Luis Obispo High School and netted $15,500 for the music programs at the two schools. The concert was developed in response to budget cuts in the school district, and each year this concert has helped raise money for the many projects undertaken by the bands and choirs.
Participation in music programs contribute to higher test scores in math, reading and creativity. Students in the arts are found to be more self-confident and better able to express their ideas. The students in these classes are devoted to music and work hard to perfect their art. Community support is vital to help provide more than simply the basic classroom activities that make the programs so vibrant.
